In life, sometimes you choose your destiny - and other times life chooses for you. The latter is certainly true for us. We were thrust into the world of Autism after we adopted our son Mitchell nearly 13 years ago.
Mitchell was diagnosed with ASD in early 2001 and like many families we struggled to understand how to best help him - what kind of therapies were needed, what kind of school would be best for him as well as many other questions that we had at that time. We found that raising a child on the spectrum was all consuming and expensive.
Although we are active in supporting organizations for research and legislative support, I was struck by one of the committee meetings we had while working on a waiver program. A young lady on a panel with me told the story of her three children on the spectrum and how they had spent their life savings on therapy, school and treatments and that they might lose their home.
That night, my wife Lisa and I decided to help others with children on the spectrum to meet some of their financial needs and started the Lil Mac Kids Autism Foundation (originally called the Mitchell A. Callahan Autism Foundation) at our kitchen table.
The Lil MAC Kids Foundation is a non-profit (501c3) organization formed to assist needy families in Ohio and Minnesota with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We are a 100% volunteer organization and with the help of many friends and family members, Lil MAC Kids has been helping families with more than $100,000 in financial aid.
With the proper therapies, many children with ASD are capable of living more productive and self-supportive lives. However, due to the high costs of Autism therapies and programs, many families are unable to provide the early intervention their children so desperately need.
Our goal of the Lil MAC Kids Foundation is to provide financial assistance to help bridge this gap - but we can't do it alone.
Please join us in our efforts to raise Autism Awareness. With your help, we can make a difference in the life of a child and family that have been affected by ASD. You can learn more about them on this page.
Since our founding, we have raised over $100,000 and distributed this money to more than 30 families
with children diagnosed with Autism.
Some of the most needy have received grants of up to $5,000 for therapy, living expenses or even buying reliable transportation. Others might just need help paying for an iPad or other teaching aids.
We have visited most of our recipients and all of them love their children dearly, want to provide the best therapies and are truly in financial distress.
To see the relief and joy on their faces is truly a blessing!
